After a railway has been opened, the railway shall be inspected by an engineer, to be appointed by the Director General, in such manner and at such intervals as may be prescribed by any regulations made under the Act.
The inspection carried out by the department is to ensure that the operation and maintenance regime of the railway is done in compliance with the standard railway operation and maintenance manual. The purpose of the inspections, amongst others, is to:
Ensure good record keeping of preventive and schedule maintenance
Ensure the system has been maintained according to the maintenance regime specified by the railway operators
Ensure that maintenance equipments have been calibrated accordingly
Ensure safety equipments are operationally functioned
Ensure a satisfactory service level being offered to the passengers
Ensure good house keeping throughout the entire railway system
Ensure that operators provide the necessary facilities for the comfort and well-being of passengers and the disabled
